On Tuesday, BJP MP Anurag Thakur made a pointed comment on the caste census that seemed to be directed at Rahul Gandhi and the Congress. Anurag Thakur’s comment prompted high drama in the Lok Sabha. When Thakur said, “The one whose caste is not known is talking about the census,” the opposition retaliated fiercely.
Heated Exchange in Parliament
There was an instant uproar in the Lok Sabha over Thakur’s remark. Rahul Gandhi intervened, saying, “You can insult me as much as you want, but you should not forget that we will get the caste census bill passed in Parliament.” The atmosphere remained heated, even after Thakur insisted he had not mentioned anyone in particular. The MPs’ discontent persisted despite Jagdambika Pal, the person in charge of the proceedings, making an effort to restore order to the session. “Whoever in this country speaks for the downtrodden, fights for them, they have to take abuses from others,” stated Gandhi amid the chaos, expressing his resolve. I’ll gladly accept all of the abuse. Like Arjun in Mahabharata, I can only see the fish’s eye.

Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav also joined the fray, questioning the appropriateness of asking someone about their caste, emphasizing that such inquiries should not be made.
The argument over the caste census in India is still going strong, with both sides strongly defending their beliefs. The argument between Gandhi and Thakur illustrates the nation’s larger political conflicts around caste identity and representation.
