Ariha Shah Case: The Ministry of External Affairs has assured Ariha’s parents that the child will come back to them soon.
Ariha Shah, a 2-year-old girl child was taken away from her parents in September 2021 by German childcare authorities on charges of sexual abuse. Though these charges were dropped in February 2022, Ariha is still in the custody of the German authorities. Her parents, both Indian nationals, have been trying to meet the EAM for several months.
Following the attempts of Ariha’s parents trying to meet Dr S.Jaishankar, the MEA issued a statement: “Our efforts have been guided by the best interests of the child, which we believe can be fully realized only when she is in her home country where her socio-cultural rights can be safeguarded. Accordingly, we have been requesting Germany to return the child to India. The Embassy has repeatedly requested German authorities to ensure that Ariha’s connection with her cultural, religious and linguistic background is not compromised and sought consular access to the child as well as cultural immersion at the Indian Cultural Centre in Berlin.”
Meanwhile, the German government has said it is in close touch with the Indian embassy in Berlin.
Why is Ariha in German childcare custody?
In 2021, Ariha received an injury in her genital area. When she was taken to the hospital, doctors suspected that the child was a victim of sexual assault. Although later investigations ruled out this theory, German authorities charged the parents with being careless about Ariha.
The child was later sent to German Child Services for proper care.
Remembering Sushma Swaraj
Dhara Shah, Ariha’s mother says she remembers Sushma Swaraj for helping Indians stranded abroad.
“Sushma Swaraj, she was a mother. So she understood the pain of a mother,” said Dhara to India Today.
