Manipur violence: Army Chief General Manoj Pande is set to visit Manipur today May 27 to review the security situation as fresh violence broke out in the state, said Indian Army officials.
They said the Army Chief would be briefed by the Eastern Command officials on the measures taken to bring the situation under control. The visit comes ahead of Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit on May 29.
Meanwhile, the Indian Army and Assam Rifles have stepped up security across Manipur in view of recent violence.
Firing incidents prevented
Army prevented firing incidents between the two communities in Imphal East and Churchandpur. Though some armed men opened fire and ran towards higher reaches, no casualties were underway, army said.
There have been violent communal clashes in Manipur due to the Manipur High Court (HC) directing the State to pursue a 10-year-old recommendation to grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the non-tribal Meitei community.
During his visit, General Manoj Pande will review the situation in the violence-hit state. The Eastern Army Commander Lt Gen Rana Pratap Kalita will also accompany the Army Chief during his two-day visit to the state.
