Army rescues over 2,000 tourists stranded in North Sikkim due to inclement weather

Heavy rain lashed entire Sikkim on Friday. Due to this landslide near Chungthang in North Sikkim and a bridge was washed away, around 3500 tourists were trapped. The Trishakti Corps of the Indian Army and the Border Roads Organization acted promptly and evacuated all the tourists safely.

Army rescues over 2,000 tourists

Army spokesman Lt Col Mahendra Rawat said that on Friday heavy rains and bad weather worked overnight to build a temporary crossing over the flash flood area to facilitate the rescue of tourists. The tourists were helped to cross the river and were provided with food, tent and medical aid. He told that till 5 pm on Saturday, more than 2000 tourists have been rescued.

Efforts are on to restore road connectivity, while the evacuation of tourists will continue. Tents are being put up and medical aid posts have been set up. All possible assistance will be provided to the tourists till the way is cleared for their onward journey. The Indian Army is active in providing assistance to tourists and the local population, guarding the border in the high altitude areas of the Himalayas.
