Indians are giving up their citizenship of India and are settling in other countries. Regarding this, the government has presented a shocking figure in the Parliament. The Ministry of External Affairs said that since 2011 till now 1.6 million that is 16 lakh people have given up Indian citizenship. This year till October 31, 183,741 Indians have renounced their citizenship. This information was given by Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan in the Lok Sabha on Friday. On being asked by a Congress MP how many Indians have renounced their citizenship since 2015 – the minister presented figures for the last eight years.
Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan said that in 2015, 131,489 Indians had renounced their citizenship. Apart from these, 141,603 in 2016, 133,049 in 2017, 134,561 in 2018, 144,017 Indians went abroad in 2019 before the Corona epidemic. After this, in 2020, 86,256 Indians renounced their citizenship. At the same time, after the end of the epidemic, in 2021, this figure crossed 1.5 lakh and reached 163,370. Now in 2022, till the month of October itself, 183,741 Indians have left the country.
Since 2011, 1.6 million have renounced Indian citizenship
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, this figure was 122,819 in 2011, 120,923 in 2012, 131,405 in 2013 and 129,328 in 2014. If we add the figures given by the ministry, it is known that since 2011, 1.6 million Indians gave up their citizenship and settled abroad. The Congress MP had also asked how much money the Indians settled abroad had taken out of the country, the minister said that the ministry does not have its figures.
Minister of State for External Affairs Muraleedharan also informed that 93 in 2015, 153 in 2016, 175 in 2017, 129 in 2018, 113 in 2019, 27 in 2020, 42 in 2021 and only 60 in 2022, apart from citizens of Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Foreign nationals acquired Indian citizenship.
Meanwhile, in response to a question asked by BJP MP Rahul Kaswan, the Minister of State for External Affairs said that there are thousands of Indians who are lodged in foreign jails and are serving sentences.
More than 4000 Indians are lodged in the jails of Gulf countries
The Minister of State for External Affairs informed that 8,441 Indians are lodged in foreign jails, including under-trials. Of these, 4,389 Indians are lodged in the jails of United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman alone. India has also signed an agreement with UAE for transfer of such cases, where prisoners can be transferred for further punishment.
