The Customs Department has arrested a cabin crew of an Air India Express flight at Kochi International Airport for smuggling over 1.4 kg of gold. Gold was found on Wednesday from a crew member of the Bahrain-Kozhikode-Kochi Air India Express flight, following which he was arrested by Customs officials.
The Customs Department has recovered 1487 grams of gold from the cabin crew. The cabin crew was smuggling gold inside their uniforms. Shafi Sharaf, a resident of Wayanad, had wrapped this gold inside his uniform in his arms.
Officials said that the cabin crew of Air India was arrested at Kochi Airport on Wednesday on charges of gold smuggling.
Was carrying gold wrapped in hands
Customs officials had received information that Shafi, a cabin crew of Bahrain-Kozhikode-Kochi flight, was carrying gold. The accused had planned to pass through the green channel by wrapping the gold in his hands and covering it with the sleeve of his shirt. Although he could not succeed in that. Officials have said in the information that Shafi is being questioned further.
Air India Express said that the arrested employee has been suspended with immediate effect. The airline said that such behavior cannot be tolerated at all. After receiving the report from the investigating officers, strict action will be taken against the person and he may even be dismissed.
