As Cyclone Tauktae Heads For Gujarat, Army deployed there

As “extremely severe” Cyclone Tauktae hurtled towards the Gujarat , Army units have been deployed. While the storm is likely to cross the Gujarat coast between Porbandar and Mahuva tonight.

“The cyclonic storm over the Arabian Sea led to very strong winds blowing in Mumbai on Monday afternoon”, civic officials said.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that Cyclone Tauktae has now intensified into an “extremely severe cyclonic storm”.

It is about to reach Gujarat coast by late Monday and cross the state coast between 8pm and 11pm, the IMD adds.

Meanwhile about 150,000 people have moved from their home to safety place by Indian authorities .

According to reports, Cyclone Tauktae killed at least 12 people and left a trail of destruction as it brushed past the coastal states of Kerala, Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra.

“This will be the most severe cyclone to hit Gujarat in at least 20 years. This can be compared with the 1998 cyclone that hit Kandla and inflicted heavy damage,” said the state’s revenue secretary, Pankaj Kumar.
