Responding to reports of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act‘s rules emerging before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi voiced his concerns, labeling the law anti-constitutional. The controversial CAA, passed in 2019, has been a subject of debate and protest due to its religious basis.
Owaisi’s Opposition
Owaisi, known for his strong stance, deems CAA as anti-constitutional, arguing that it is formulated on religious grounds. He warns against coupling CAA with NPR-NRC, stating it would result in grave injustice, particularly affecting Muslims, Dalits, and the economically disadvantaged, irrespective of their caste or religion.
Yechury’s Accusation
CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury accuses the Centre of fostering communal polarization ahead of the Lok Sabha elections by notifying the long-pending CAA rules. He asserts that the delayed notification suggests a strategic move to exploit the law for electoral gains.
Impending Notification
As per an anonymous official, the Citizenship (Amendment) Act’s rules are set to be notified well before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, stirring concerns and reactions from various political quarters.
CAA Background and Protests
Recapping the CAA’s provisions, the law facilitates citizenship for non-Muslims from neighboring countries. Its passage in 2019 triggered significant protests, notably at Shaheen Bagh, reflecting public discontent.
