Asaram Bapu: A Gujarat court on Tuesday sentenced Asaram Bapu to life imprisonment in a rape case. The court has also fined him Rs 50,000. The Gujarat case had called the self-style godman a habitual offender, sentencing life imprisonment to him. The 81-year-old who is serving a life sentence in a Jodhpur jail for raping a minor was virtually present in the court. Asaram was found guilty of rape, sodomy, molestation, illegal detention, illegal confinement of a survivor, and criminal intimidation.
Asaram Bapu sentenced lifetime imprisonment
More than nine years after a former disciple of Asaram Bapu filed a case against him, he was sentenced to life imprisonment on Tuesday. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on him. The prosecution had called him a habitual offender. Asaram, who is currently serving his time in a Jodhpur jail was present in the session court via a video link. His wife had also not attended the session owing to health issues. Meanwhile, his lawyer has said that they will be challenging the decision in Gujarat High Court.
Additional sessions judge acquitted six others — Asaram’s wife, Lakshmi, his daughter, Bharti, his Motera ashram office-bearer Dhruvben Balani, employee Jaswantiben Chaudhary, and his followers Nirmala, alias Dhel, and Mira, alias Baglo, in the case.
What was the case?
A rape case was filed against Asaram Bapu by his former disciple on October 6, 2013. An FIR was registered at Chandkheda Police Station in Ahmedabad against the self-styled godman and six others. The victim informed who was a native for Surat revealed that she was raped several times from 2001 to 2006 when she was living at his ashram at Motera near Ahmedabad. A chargesheet in the case was filed in 2014.
