In connection with a 2019 hate speech case against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the MP/MLA court in Rampur on Thursday sentenced Samajwadi Party MLA Mohd Azam Khan to three years in prison and imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on him.
The SP leader received bail shortly after the sentence’s quantum was announced, along with one week to challenge the decision.
Azam Khan was found guilty under Sections 125 of the Representation of People Act, 1951, as well as Sections 153a (promoting hatred between two groups) and 505-1 (statement conducing to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The BJP leader Akash Saxena who had filed the charge against Azam Khan described the court’s ruling as vindication of his position. He claimed that the decision was historic and would cause people to pause before making hurtful remarks.
