Shahzad Ahmad: Indian Mujahideen operative and Batla House encounter convict Shahzad Ahmad, died during treatment at Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Saturday, according to prison officials.
Shahzad was held guilty and convicted in the 2008 Batla House encounter case for murdering inspector Mohan Chand Sharma and attempting to cause death of Head Constables Balwant Singh and Rajbir Singh by firing at them.
Inspector killed in encounter
Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma was leading the police team during the Batla House encounter when he was shot and killed during the encounter. Shahzad was also found guilty of assaulting police officers and obstructing them from doing their duty.
Shahzad died due to prolong illness at Delhi’s AIIMS. He was admitted to AIIMS since earlier in January. Shahzad was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Batla House encounter case of September 19, 2008.
He had appealed in Delhi High Court his conviction in the case. According to Delhi police, Shahzad had escaped from the spot and was arrested later. A trial court had tried and convicted Shahzad.
Batla House encounter
On September 18, 2008, Delhi Police carried out an armed operation at Batla House of Jamia Nagar, Okhla, in Delhi to arrest terrorists of the Indian terror outfit Indian Mujahideen. The terrorists were hiding in a flat in the Batla House. In the operation two terrorists and one police officer, Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma, died while the remaining terrorists were arrested. On 15 March 2021, one of the arrested Ariz Khan alias Junaid, was sentenced to death for the murder of Inspector Sharma.
