BBC: A fresh investigation on possible foreign exchange irregularities has requested financial information from the BBC in India. Earlier this year, a tax inquiry was underway against Britain’s public broadcaster. The Enforcement Directorate is reportedly looking into the BBC’s international transfers, according to sources. Under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), BBC India has been the target of a case filed by the Enforcement Directorate.

This comes after the Income Tax authorities investigated the BBC and sent teams to the broadcaster’s offices in Delhi and Mumbai on claims of tax fraud, profit-diversion schemes, and rule-breaking. Senior BBC employees were required to spend the night at work during the survey to answer questions.

The income and earnings reported by several BBC group corporations were “not commensurate” with the scope of their operations in India, according to the Central Board of Direct Taxes, the administrative body for the Income Tax department, and tax had not been paid on some remittances by its foreign entities.The tax inspections were conducted a few weeks after a documentary on British television criticised Gujarat’s government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 2002 sectarian violence. In its two-part “India: The Modi Question” series, the BBC looked into claims that Prime Minister Modi, while serving as the Chief Minister of Gujarat, didn’t do enough to put an end to the riots. The Supreme Court had already rejected these claims. In January, the government deleted posts promoting the documentary using its emergency powers.
