Tripura Assembly Polls: The Tipra Motha party’s demand for Greater Tipraland is the only one that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has stated it will not accept. The governing party made this announcement on Thursday because polling data suggested that the BJP was likely to win a third straight term in the northeastern state of Tripura. At one in the afternoon, the BJP had won one and was ahead in 32 seats, one more than the majority threshold. One had also been won by the BJP’s current ally, the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura.
Forming the state’s new government
The Tipra Motha party, which was established by Pradyot Bikram Manikya Deb Barma, the head of the royal family, was in the lead with 11 seats. Due to this, the party may end up being the BJP’s most important ally. Even without the additional support of the Tipra Motha, the BJP has a fairly clear path to victory because the opposition Left Front + Congress was leading in 15 seats overall. BJP’s Tripura unit’s chief spokesperson, Subrata Chakraborty, claims that “As we have stated from the beginning, we are forming the state’s new government. Phanindranath Sarma and Sambit Patra, two central leaders, are present to supervise; hopefully, more will be arriving today.” Although the Tipra Motha is a new party, its promise of a ‘Greater Tipraland’ for the state’s indigenous population has resonated with voters and is expected to help the party eat into the vote shares of its rivals.
Tipra Motha party might become the king-making force
The Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura and the BJP both won elections in 2018 on the strength of the same pledge, but the tribal party fell short of its promises. Deb Barma was able to launch the Tipra Motha in 2019 thanks to this opening. By winning the election for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council in 2021, he issued a warning. Nearly two-thirds of the state is covered by the TTAADC, which is 90% tribal. The Tripura Indigenous People’s Front won 0 seats, the BJP won 10, and the Tipra Motha won 18 seats. Deb Barma received numerous offers from the BJP and the CPIM prior to the vote on February 16, but he resisted. Now, his Tipra Motha party might become the king-making force.
