Bibek Debroy died early this morning due to complications from intestinal obstruction, as reported by AIIMS Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep sorrow over the loss, describing Mr. Debroy as a “towering scholar.” In a heartfelt message on social media, PM Modi emphasized Mr. Debroy’s extensive knowledge and his dedication to making complex topics accessible, particularly through his work on ancient Indian texts for younger generations.

Bibek Debroy had a remarkable academic career. Prior to attending esteemed universities like Trinity College in Cambridge, the Delhi School of Economics, and Presidency College in Kolkata, he attended the Ramakrishna Mission School in Narendrapur. Due to his varied educational experience, he was able to develop a distinctive viewpoint on a range of topics.

Professional Journey and Contributions

Throughout his career, Debroy held significant positions in numerous esteemed institutions, including Presidency College in Kolkata, the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics in Pune, and the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade in Delhi. He also played a pivotal role as the Director of a legal reforms project for the Ministry of Finance and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Furthermore, he served as a member of NITI Aayog until June 5, 2019.
