Bihar: Unbelievable ! After train engine and mobile tower, thieves steal 2 km long railway track in Samastipur

Bihar

Bihar: In what could be described as one of the most bizarre cases, the theft of a railway line in the Bihar district of Samastipur has come to attention. The stolen track reportedly measures approximately 2 km in length. In response, two employees of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) have been suspended pending investigation. If found guilty, an FIR will be filed against the accused. The incident was made public on January 24, 2023.

Railway line was shut some time ago

Investigations indicate that the Samastipur railway division may be involved. The Lohat sugar mill in the area, which had been inactive, had a railway line built for freight transport connecting it to the Pandaul Railway Station. This line was also shut down and was scheduled to be auctioned as scrap. However, it was discovered that the approximately 2 km rail line had been sold without a competitive tender, with the involvement of some department members. Despite this, some media sources claim that the length of the stolen tracks is only half a km.

The authenticity of the theft was confirmed following a railway investigation. A case was filed at the RPF post in Darbhanga. The initial inquiry revealed the involvement of Jamadar Mukesh Kumar Singh from Madhubani and Srinivas, who was in charge of the Jhanjharpur outpost. Both have been accused of selling the railway line to private parties without a competitive tender. The investigation is ongoing, and those found guilty will be dealt with by filing a FIR.

Similar cases of theft from Bihar

The police have so far arrested father and son, Anil Yadav and Rahul Kumar, in connection with the case. Rahul Kumar had worked as a munshi for a scrap processing business at a sugar mill.

This is not an only case, as similar incidents have been reported in the past, including the theft of a train engine in November.

Another incident took place at the Yarpur Rajputana area of Patna’s Gardnibagh police station. The landowner, upon noticing the theft of a mobile tower, questioned the perpetrators. They claimed to be employees of the company that owned the tower and proceeded to dismantle it, load it onto a truck, and drive away. The police estimate the tower to be worth approximately Rs 19 lakh.
