Bilkis Bano case: The Supreme Court on Thursday, 25 August, will hear three petitions challenging the release of 11 men who were convicted for the gang rape of Bilkis Bano and the murder of her family members during the 2002 Gujarat riots.
The convicts had been released by the Gujarat government on 15 August, leading to a nationwide outcry.
The Chief Justice had on Tuesday agreed to list the petition urgently when it was mentioned in court for early hearing by advocate Aparna Bhat.

“We are challenging the remission. Fourteen people were killed and a pregnant woman was assaulted,” senior advocate Kapil Sibal, who accompanied Ms. Bhat for the mentioning, had highlighted the gravity of the crime.
The convicts were sentenced to life term in prison by a special court in Mumbai in 2008 for the gangrape and the murder of seven members of Bilkis Bano’s family. The sentence was later upheld by the Bombay High Court.
The Supreme Court passed on the matter of remission to the state government after one of the convicts had approached it with an appeal for release.
