Rahul Gandhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) praised the Surat court judgement rejecting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s request for a stay of Conviction following his conviction in a defamation case, and labelled the appellate court’s ruling a “slap on the face of the Gandhi family” on Thursday.
Rahul Gandhi’s request for a stay of his conviction
Sambit Patra, the national spokesperson for the BJP, claimed that the verdict is a triumph for the nation’s citizens when speaking at a press conference on the subject. The BJP claimed that the court’s ruling demonstrated how the law applies equally to all people and that ‘no family can receive preferential treatment.’ This comes after the Surat court on Thursday denied Rahul Gandhi’s request for a stay of his conviction in the 2019 criminal defamation case involving the statement about the “Modi surname.”
The BJP leader hailed the court’s decision as a pivotal one for the judiciary
‘The court’s ruling is a smack in the Gandhi family’s face. The Surat court today demonstrated the equality of the law,’ according to Sambit Patra. The BJP leader hailed the court’s decision as a pivotal one for the judiciary, stating that it makes clear that “no protests or mobilization can cause the judiciary to buckle under pressure”
The court also sent letters to the state government
The Congress leader, who had appealed his conviction in the case, received bail earlier on April 3 from the Surat Sessions Court. The court also sent letters to the state government and the complainant Purnesh Modi regarding the Congress leader’s request for a stay of his conviction along with granting bail to the former MP. After hearing from all parties, it set the order for April 20.

Rahul Gandhi lost his right to serve as a member of parliament
In an attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rahul remarked, “How come all the thieves have modi as the common surname?” in April 2019 at a rally in Karnataka’s kolar. In a lawsuit brought by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Purnesh Modi, a lower court in Surat sentenced Rahul Gandhi, a Lok Sabha MP from Wayanad, to two years in prison on March 23 for violating sections 499 and 500 (defamation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). This resulted in Gandhi’s disqualification. As a result of his conviction, Rahul lost his right to serve as a member of parliament on March 24. Any MP or MLA is automatically disqualified under the judgement if they are found guilty and given a term of two years or more.
