Suspended Jharkhand BJP leader Seema Patra was arrested by the Ranchi Police today for torturing a tribal woman, who worked as her house help. BJP had suspended Patra over allegations that she kept the woman captive for eight years and tortured her. The case was registered at Argora police station.
“She has been taken into custody. Other formalities are being completed,” said Ranchi senior superintendent of police Kishor Kaushal. Patra, believed to be in mid 60s, would be produced in the court later in the day.
The saffron party has suspended Patra, the wife of a retired IAS officer, after a video of the woman, Sunita, narrating her ordeal, went viral on social media with demands for Patra’s arrest.

Members of various tribal outfits visited Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) where the woman is undergoing treatment and met her. Acting on a tip-off from a government employee, the Ranchi Police rescued the woman from Patra’s residence last week and got her statement recorded on Tuesday before the magistrate, sources said.
The Patras and their two children, a son and a daughter, reside in the city’s upscale Ashok Nagar neighbourhood in Ranchi.
A police official familiar with the development said the woman, in her statement, has levelled charges only against Seema Patra. “We can’t reveal details at this stage. All aspects related to the case is under investigation.
