Anger over the alleged rape and murder of a young girl, whose body was discovered on Friday morning, has led to new reports of violence from Kaliyaganj in West Bengal, according to news agency PTI. The residents protested the incident on Saturday night, according to the police.
Locket Chatterjee of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday and criticised the West Bengal government for its response to the recent incident involving the alleged rape and murder of a young girl in the North Dinajpur district, according to news agency ANI.
“Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is not doing justice to her post, she should resign. West Bengal government wants to hide the evidence. There should be a CBI investigation in this case,” ANI quoted the senior BJP leader as saying.
As quoted by AnI BJP leader Bharati Ghosh said, “Police overlooked all rules that they must follow when any crime is committed. They dragged the body in a very insensitive manner. Police have become an active participant in the whole process of crime. They are trying to cover up the crime scene, destroy evidence and save the culprits. I demand CBI investigation into this incident.”
The girl, who lives in the village of Gangua in the North Dinajpur district, reportedly vanished on Thursday night after leaving for her lessons, according to a report by the news agency PTI. The entire night, her family and locals searched extensively for her, but they were unable to locate her. Later, on Friday morning, her body was located in a canal.
Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, alleged that the BJP MLAs were not given access to the victim’s family on Saturday.
Adhikari, who condemned the act, had earlier criticised the government for its “lawlessness” and blamed the police for the crime.
Suvendu Adhikari on his twitter handle wrote, “Another rape & murder of a Minor Girl in WB. The dead body of a Class X student; belonging to the Rajbongshi Community, from Kaliaganj; Uttar Dinajpur was found in such condition. Days after Tribal ladies were punished with atonement ritual, this happens to a Rajbongshi girl.”
Sukanta Majumdar, the state leader of the BJP, urged a CBI investigation into the incident in order to guarantee the victim received justice. He asserted that the police have changed their minds about the case and won’t listen to the people. He further said that the incident had already been classified as a suicide by the authorities.
