Manipur: The Manipur unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has written a letter to the national party president, JP Nadda, attributing the current ethnic unrest in the state to its own government. This public display of discontent highlights the severity of the situation, with the party leadership cautioning that the “people’s anger and protest is turning the tide.”
Letter highlights the present situation in Manipur
Signed by the highest-ranking officials of the Manipur BJP, including State Chief A Sarda Devi, the letter was sent to Nadda on Friday. These leaders have appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the escalating concerns. The BJP’s Manipur division highlighted that the ongoing turmoil has endured for approximately four months, commencing on May 3, 2023, and extending to the present. In the letter, they underscored the substantial hardships endured by the general population throughout this period.
The letter read, “Our party at the state level is also playing a crucial role in coping with the new developments in this crisis. Public anger and protest are now slowly turning the tide, placing the responsibility for this prolonged disturbance squarely on the government’s failure to address the situation.”
Furthermore, the BJP’s Manipur unit urged JP Nadda to liaise with the Home Ministry to accelerate the biometric registration of illegal immigrants from Myanmar, expediting the implementation of the National Register of Citizenship (NRC) in the state.
BJP Leaders push for demands
They also demanded the swift restoration of traffic on the two national highways within the state. They suggested that both the central and state governments should employ all available measures, including legal actions such as apprehending individuals causing disruptions, to ensure the uninterrupted flow of traffic on these highways.
The letter emphasized the pressing necessity to reintegrate displaced individuals into their original places of residence. It called upon the government to honor its commitments regarding compensation for those who lost their homes, along with providing ex-gratia payments to the injured and deceased.
Additionally, the letter advocated for the potential revocation of Article 355 if it has been imposed in the state. It proposed the restoration of full authority of the unified command to the Chief Minister, aiming to boost public confidence in the government’s capacity to address the situation effectively. Lastly, the letter appealed for all possible assistance and support to secure the release of Moirangthem Anand Singh, who was detained by the NIA in connection with the recent crisis in the state.
