Uddhav Thackeray has resigned as Chief Minister of Maharashtra minutes after the Supreme Court gave its go-ahead to the floor test on Thursday.
“We respect the Supreme Court judgment. Democracy must be followed,” Uddhav Thackeray said in an online address. Thackeray said he was also quitting as a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council.
“The Supreme Court has given the verdict on the floor test. I want to thank the governor who upheld the democracy by asking us to hold a floor test in 24 hours after a delegation met them.”
“I am satisfied that we have officially renamed Aurangabad to Sambhaji Nagar and Osmanabad to Dharashiv – the cities named by Balasaheb Thackeray,” he said in his speech after the apex court verdict.

Thackeray said he fulfilled his father late Bal Thackeray’s dream of renaming Aurangabad city as Sambhajinagar.
“While taking a decision on renaming Aurangabad, the NCP and Congress did not oppose it. But what I feel bad is that only four Shiv Sena Ministers were present. Others we all know where they are.”
Thackeray thanked Congress leader Sonia Gandhi and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) supremo Sharad Pawar for being by the Shiv Sena’s side.
