The 4G technology of state-owned telecom company BSNL will be upgraded to 5G in five-seven months. BSNL has around 1.35 lakh mobile towers across the country. It has more presence in rural areas where other telecom companies do not provide complete coverage. BSNL has asked Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to provide equipment for 5G testing.

Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw gave this information in a program of industry organization CII. On the question related to the contribution of BSNL in the telecom sector by Uday Kotak, CEO of Kotak Bank, Vaishnaw said that BSNL will have a big role to play in strengthening the sector. He informed, “Telecom technology stake will be launched. This is a 4G technology stack which will be upgraded to 5G in five to seven months. It will start on about 1.35 lakh telecom towers across the country.” He said that after starting 5G network, BSNL will become a big company in this sector.
Reliance Jio, one of the country’s top telecom companies, has signed contracts with Europe’s telecom equipment suppliers Nokia and Ericsson to build its mega 5G network. Swedish telecom equipment maker Ericsson has announced a long-term contract with Reliance Jio to build 5G networks. Under this, Ericsson’s energy efficient 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) products and solutions will be given to Jio. This is the first tie-up between Jio and Ericsson for radio access network in the country. Reliance Jio Chairman Akash Ambani said, “We are confident that Jio’s 5G network will drive the country’s digitization and act as a foundation in fulfilling the Digital India plan.” In the spectrum auction held earlier this year, Reliance Jio had bagged spectrum worth around $11 billion.
Apart from this, Nokia, one of the largest telecom equipment companies, said that it has signed a multi-year deal with Reliance Jio to build one of the largest 5G networks in the world. Under this, Nokia will supply base stations, high-capacity 5G massive MIMO antenna and some other equipment.
