Budget 2023: With just two days to go for Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to present the Union Budget, middle-class, farmers, backward class and businessman have major expectations. While middle-class expects tax deductions, educationalist want the government to introduce new policies. The common people are eagerly looking forward to February 1, anticipating the budget will have something in store for every sector. Meanwhile, housewives are the ones who have borne the weight of inflation in the last one year. With job losses during Covid, the homemakers had to manage the house in a budget limited than ever. With pandemic fear wavering off, they definitely expect the FM to reduction in the price of essential commodities.
Inflation biggest wary for housewives
When asked about her expectations from the government, Kanchan Jha, a housewife from Bihar, said, “While government is focused on holistic development of the country, middle-class is still not in the focus. Despite the middle class comprising of the majority of population in the country, the budget isn’t inclusive for them.” Echoing the sentiments of all the housewives, she said that the government needs to put more emphasis on the middle-class.
Another housewife, Renu Singh, shed light on the issue of inflation that for long has bothered the entire nation. She listed various commodities including school fees and ration, that have seen humungous rise over the years. Expressing confidence in the current government, she said that government need to improve the overall structure of the budget which must include every sector.
The exponential rise in the price of LPG gas has remained one of the biggest concerns for the middle class. Voicing the same, Renu Singh added, “if the price hike continues, it will be difficult to run a household.” Kanjan Jha also second this as she said food being the primary need of every class, an LPG cylinder is required at every household. Further, she added that the price of dairy is also being hiked at regular intervals, which have bothered the entire nation.
What FICCI said
Meanwhile, in pre-budget memorandum, FICCI said, “To mitigate food inflation, resolute action backed with hard data is required at multiple points and among multiple stakeholders. This can be done only by an efficient structure, backed by the authority of the PMO. A Food Inflation Response and Strategy Team be set-up to create an e-enabled, empowered coordination framework which can work with and across multiple key governmental agencies, to proactively address food inflation through logistical strategies in the short term. In the long-term learnings must be captured to form the basis of agricultural production and distribution planning for supply side management of inflation.”
