Budget 2024: Surge in Cyber Attacks Spurs Indian Government to Double Allocation

Budget 2024

Budget 2024: In the 2024 interim budget, the Indian government almost increased the amount allotted for cybersecurity projects, from Rs 400 crore in 2023–2024 to Rs 750 crore in 2024–2025, at a time when cyberattacks on government buildings are common. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is responsible for the majority of these initiatives.

Previous Budget Allocation

The budget allotted for cybersecurity projects in 2022–2023 was Rs 30 crore. However, there was a notable increase for the 2023–2024 timeframe. The revised allocation estimates for this year’s budget come to Rs 750 crore. This occurs at a time when government institutions have been the target of multiple cybersecurity assaults, the most notable of which was the ransomware attack that took down the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in 2023.

Mitigation of Vulnerable Services

The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), India’s nodal organisation for cybersecurity, handled 1,391,457 cybersecurity events in 2022, according to its annual report, which was published in November 2023. With a total of 875,892 occurrences, the mitigation of vulnerable services accounted for the greatest number of CERT-In’s 1.39 million cybersecurity events.
