“Under this scheme, the Center will encourage states to promote alternative fertilizers and reduce the use of chemical fertilizers,” Fertilizer Minister Mansukh Mandaviya told reporters after the cabinet meeting.

Citing an example, he said that if a state using 10 lakh tonnes of conventional fertiliser, reduces its consumption by three lakh tonnes, then Rs 3,000 crore of subsidy would be saved. Out of this remaining subsidy, 50 percent that is Rs 1,500 crore will be given to that state for the use of alternative fertilizers and other development works.
