India Canada Relations: India and Canada relations are hitting new lows as the days are passing. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has sharply criticized Canada for blocking the social media accounts of an Australian media outlet, Australia Today. The ban came just hours after the outlet reported on the press conference between India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and his Australian counterpart, Penny Wong.
MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal Slams Canada’s Ban on Australia Media Outlet
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal expressed surprise at Canada’s actions, calling them “strange” and highlighting the timing of the ban. The Australia Today social media accounts were blocked shortly after they covered the press meet, raising questions about Canada’s stance on free speech. Jaiswal also referred to the media outlet as an important source for the Indian diaspora and criticised Canada’s hypocrisy in restricting freedom of expression.
Randhir Jaiswal pointed out that Canada’s actions went against its professed support for freedom of speech. The ban on Australia Today follows a broader pattern of behavior by Canada that India has consistently criticised.
S Jaishankar Had Condemned Anti-India Activities in Canada During Press Meet
During his recent visit to Australia, S. Jaishankar condemned the violence against Hindus and Hindu temples in Canada. He expressed his deep concerns over the activities of Khalistani groups that have been targeting Hindus. This was a key reason why Canada blocked Australia Today’s media outlets, as the news outlet reported on Jaishankar’s press conference.
