According to Police, a 22-year-old lady was arrested for allegedly throwing acid on her ex-boyfriend during his wedding to an other woman in a village in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region.
According to Nivedita Pal, additional superintendent of police for Bastar, the accused’s involvement in the crime came to light during the inquiry, leading to her arrest on Sunday.
On April 19, the event took place when the bride-to-be, Damrudhar Baghel (25), was getting married to a woman, Chhote Amabal, in the Bhanpuri police station’s area. The acid attack left the bride, the groom, and 10 guests with minor burns.
The investigation was started by police after they filed a case under section 326 A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by use of acid, etc.).
“We scanned footage of some CCTV cameras installed in the village, activated informers and checked the background of the bride and the groom,” the police officer said.
Because the incident occurred in the late evenings and there was a power outage at the time, according to Ms. Pal, no one could see the accused.
An ex-girlfriend of the groom who had been suspected was arrested after the investigation showed her involvement.
According to Ms. Pal, the accused claimed to have been in a relationship with Damrudhar Baghel for a number of years and informed police that Damrudhar had betrayed her by getting married to another woman.
“When the woman came to know about Damrudhar’s marriage, she planned the attack and stole acid from a chilli farm where she works,” the police officer said, adding the acid is used to clean the drip system in the farm.
According to her, the investigation showed that the accused woman utilised a male identity to hide her own identity while committing the crime.
The ex-boyfriend of a recentlywed woman had been arrested by police earlier this month for reportedly hiding a bomb inside a home cinema system that he gave to the couple in Kabirdham area.
The spouse and the woman’s older brother were killed in the equipment explosion.
