India vs China: New Delhi and Beijing held in-person diplomatic talks on the Ladakh stand-off on May 31. These talks, which focused on the proposed measures to reduce friction in eastern Ladakh, were held in New Delhi.
During this meeting, both sides agreed to have the 19th military-level talks to ensure peace and tranquillity in eastern Ladakh. The dates of the military-level talks will be decided later.
While the Indian side was led by the Joint Secretary (East Asia) in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, China was represented by the DG of the Border and Oceanic Affairs Department of the External Affairs Ministry.
An unstable frontier
China and India share a long boundary from Ladakh to Arunachal Pradesh. China claims several parts of this boundary-notably Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh- as its territory.
Beijing had occupied a vast part of Ladakh in the 1950s forcibly and since then there has been tension in this part of the border.
In June 2022, both countries clashed violently in the Galwan area of eastern Ladakh leading to several casualties.
Keeping in mind the instability on the Ladakh border, China and India keep talking to each other to maintain peace and stability in this area. It is noteworthy that both countries are nuclear-powered states.
Partners in many forums
Despite a history of conflict between them, China and India are members of several multilateral institutions like BRICS and SCO. The two nations went to war in 1962.
BRICS comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. This organization represents the top emerging markets of the world and promotes close cooperation between its member countries. SCO or the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is a collective of China, India, Pakistan and some Central Asian countries. This body ensures peace and stability between its member countries.
