Chief Justice of India: According to the news agency ANI, Chief Justice of India Uday Umesh Lalit has suggested Justice D Y Chandrachud as his replacement. After only 74 days as CJI, Justice Lalit will step down on November 8, 2022. In August of this year, when he succeeded Justice NV Ramana, he assumed leadership.
On Tuesday, October 11, in front of other Supreme Court of India justices, the Chief Justice of India gave Justice Chandrachud a copy of his letter of recommendation.
In accordance with convention, the national government wrote to Chief Justice of India Uday Umesh Lalit on October 7 to suggest a replacement.

The Ministry of Law and Justice issued a tweet stating, “In accordance with the MoP on the appointment of Chief Justice of India and Supreme Court Judges, the Hon’ble Minister of Law and Justice today sent a letter to the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India for sending his recommendations for appointment of his successor.”
The appointment and transfer of Supreme Court and high court judges are governed by the MoP.
After the CJI, Justice D Y Chandrachud is the most senior judge. According to custom and tradition, Justice Chandrachud would be sworn in as the 50th Chief Justice of India on November 9. According to reports from PTI, he would have a two-year term and leave office on November 10, 2024.
Prior to being sworn in as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court in 2013, Justice D Y Chandrachud held the position of Additional Solicitor General of India. He was promoted to judge status in the supreme court in 2016.
According to custom, high court judges retire at age 62 whereas Supreme Court judges do not till they reach the age of 65.
