Gyanvapi Mosque: Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, broke his silence on the Gyanvapi mosque controversy on Monday, saying that the Muslim community should acknowledge that it was a “historical mistake” and make amends. “If we call it a masjid, there will be disagreement over that. What is a trishul doing inside a mosque. There is a jyotirling, there are idols. Every bit of the architecture speaks about it,” CM Yogi said.
Legal Battle and ASI Survey Suspension
“I personally feel, the proposal should have come from the Muslim community admitting that they had made a historical blunder and want rectification in that regard,” Adityanath said while speaking to ANI. In order to determine whether the mosque was constructed on the site of an earlier temple, the Varanasi district court recently mandated that the Archaeological Department of India (ASI) conduct a scientific survey of the Gyanvapi mosque complex, excluding the “wazookhana” (a small reservoir used by Muslim devotees to perform ritual ablutions). However, the Muslim side managed to get in touch with the Supreme Court, which ordered the high court to consider the case. On Thursday, the Allahabad High Court announced that it had reserved judgement in the Gyanvapi survey case. On August 3, the court will announce its decision. The suspension of the ASI survey will continue till then.
The Quest for Buddhist Monasteries in Temples
In response, Swami Prasad Maurya, leader of the Samajwadi Party, warned that if the BJP looked for a temple in every mosque, then people would start looking for a Buddhist monastery in every temple. “The Badrinath and Kedarnath temples in Uttarakhand, the Jagannath Temple in Puri, the Ayyappa Temple in Kerala and the Vithoba temple in Pandharpur (Maharashtra) were Buddhist monasteries. These Buddhist monasteries were demolished and then Hindu religious shrines came up there. They were Buddhist monasteries till the eighth century,” he said on Sunday. He claimed that his purpose is not to convert these temples into Buddhist monasteries, but rather to ask, “Why shouldn’t a Buddhist monastery be searched for in every temple if you search for a temple in every mosque?”
