Siddaramaiah: On Wednesday, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticised Union Minister for External Affairs S. Jaishankar, claiming that he responded in a “most appalling manner” to former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s request for the Centre to take action in response to reports that 31 tribal people from Karnataka are stuck in Sudan.

Jairam Ramesh replied on Jaishankar’s tweet jibing on Siddaramaiah and said, “This level of nastiness from a man I have known so very well…who has developed new loyalties and who wants to show that in whatever he says and does.” Jaishankar had charged Siddaramaih with politicising Indians’ plight in Sudan’s violent environment the day before. The former chief minister of Karnataka was advised by Jaishankar in a cutting tweet to “don’t do politics” since lives were at risk.

A Keralan man had died from his wounds after being struck by a stray bullet

Siddaramaiah requested help from the Centre after learning that 31 members of the Hakki Pikki clan from Karnataka were allegedly stuck in Sudan. He said that the government has not yet taken any action to bring the 31 people back and that they have been “stranded without food for the last few days.” In an appeal, he had urged the BJP government to “immediately open diplomatic discussions & reach out to international agencies” in order to protect the indigenous peoples. The current death toll in Sudan’s violent conflict is 185, and there have been an additional 1,800 injuries, according to the UN. A Keralan man had died from his wounds after being struck by a stray bullet in the crossfire.
