PM Modi France Visit: The Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour, France’s highest honour, was presented to PM Modi. French President Emmanuel Macron has awarded Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the Grand Cross of the Legion of decoration, France’s highest civilian and military decoration, making him the first Indian Prime Minister to do so. On Thursday, July 13, 2023, Modi received the honour at the Elysee Palace in Paris and joined the ranks of other notable world leaders, including Nelson Mandela, a former president of South Africa, King Charles, a prince at the time, Angela Merkel, a former chancellor of Germany, and Boutros Boutros-Ghali, a former secretary general of the United Nations, among others.

Prime Minister Modi Honored with Red Carpet Welcome and Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour
The Prime Minister was given a red carpet welcome upon his arrival here on Thursday. He is in France for a two-day official visit. He will participate in Friday’s ceremonies of French National Day alongside President Macron as the Guest of Honour. “A warm gesture embodying the spirit of partnership. PM @narendramodi conferred with the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour, the highest award in France by President @EmmanuelMacron,” Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Arindam Bagchi tweeted. “Prime Minister thanked President Macron for this singular honour on behalf of the people of India,” the MEA said in a statement. A number of prestigious foreign accolades and distinctions have been presented to Prime Minister Modi by various nations, the most recent of which being the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour from France. Order of the Nile by Egypt in June 2023; Companion of the Order of Logohu by Papua New Guinea in May 2023; Companion of the Order of Fiji in May 2023; Ebakl Award by the Republic of Palau in May 2023; Order of the Druk Gyalpo by Bhutan in 2021; Legion of Merit by the US Government in 2020; and Order of the Distinguished Rule of Nishan Izzuddin by the Maldives in 2019.
PM Modi’s Prestigious International Awards and Honors
In 2019, Modi was honoured with the Order of St. Andrew Award from Russia and the Order of Zayed Award from the United Arab Emirates. Additionally, he was awarded the Grand Collar of the State of Palestine in 2018, the Afghan State Order of Ghazi Amir Amanullah Khan in 2016, and the Saudi Arabian Order of Abdulaziz Al Saud in 2016.The Legion of Honour, which Napoleon Bonaparte founded in 1802, is split into five classes (lower to higher).The badge is a five-armed Maltese asterisk suspended from an oak and laurel wreath, and the ribbon is red. Foreign nationals who support France or preserve its ideals may also get a distinction of the Legion of Honour, despite the fact that membership in the honour is only open to French citizens. An earlier private dinner for Mr. Modi was held by President Macron and First Lady Macron at the Elysee Palace. When Modi spoke to the Indian diaspora in this country on Thursday night, he announced a deal for the use of UPI in France, creating a sizable new market for Indian innovations in cashless fast payments. Modi noted that France was celebrating its national day and that he was the guest of honour. He praised France’s support for India and the strength of the two countries’ ties, noting that the two nations were celebrating the 25th anniversary of their strategic partnership. He urged the members of the diaspora to invest in India, citing the country’s attractiveness as an investment destination and the country’s rapid development, and he described people-to-people connections as a crucial cornerstone of the India-France alliance.
