The demolition in Haryana’s Nuh has been halted as a result of an order issued by the Punjab and Haryana High Court today.
Following the high court order, Deputy Commissioner Dhirendra Khadgata directed staff to halt the bulldozer operation. The court took up the case on its own initiative a week after communal violence in Haryana claimed six lives, caused massive property damage, and caused panic in Nuh and Gurugram.
Over 350 shanties and 50 cement structures have been dismantled in the last four days.
The demolition campaign has been criticised, with lawmakers claiming that it targeted Muslims. Furthermore, many of individuals whose homes were demolished stated that they had received no prior notice.
However, the local authority stated that they were taking action against illegal constructions and encroachment and that no individuals were being targeted.

“Demolition drive against illegal construction is underway and it will continue. Action is not being taken to target anyone. Our motive is to establish peace,” Mr Khadgata said yesterday.
Asaduddin Owaisi, MP from Hyderabad and chairman of the All India Majilis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), is among those who have criticised Haryana’s Manohar Lal Khattar government over the demolition drive.
“Confidence Building means buildings, homes and medical shops and shanties of one community (Muslims) should be Demolished without following due process to give collective punishment. The @mlkhattar government has usurped the rights of Courts of Law Confidence is being given to people who are ideologically closer to BJP/Sangh,” he had said.
The local administration also came under fire after preventing a four-member CPI delegation from entering Nuh district. The clash between the CPI leaders and the police was captured on video.

CPI MP Binoy Viswam said, “This is the plight of the country today. The reality of the day, the Police are not allowing even us. That means that under this rule, even the freedom of movement is prohibited. Hooligans, goons and fascists can move freely,” he said.
Tension is high in the areas hit by communal violence. Many of these areas have curfews in place, and paramilitary personnel are on the ground to prevent any flare-ups.
This morning, the curfew were relaxed for four hours, and ATMs were also opened. The Internet ban in the area remains in effect. According to Nuh police, over 150 persons have been arrested in connection with the incidents, and 56 cases have been filed.
