India has added 89,129 new cases of Covid-19 on Friday, its highest surge since late September, according to data from the Union Health Ministry. For the first time in a while, the active cases in the country have risen to 6.58 lakh, while at least 1,15,69,241 have recovered from the disease.
The number of fatalities were recorded at 714, mainly because of addition of previously unaccounted deaths in Maharashtra.
Maharashtra reached a new peak of 47,913 cases on Friday. Karnataka reported more than 4,900. Delhi also showed a big jump in new cases, reporting 3,594 cases. Among other states, Punjab reported 57 deaths, and Chhattisgarh 43. Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh reported 16 each.
The Chief Minister of Maharashtra addressed the citizens of the state and said that he is yet to take a decision on lockdown but cannot rule its possibility.
The country is witnessing a worrying surge in cases amid a vaccination drive through which over seven crore people have been vaccinated so far.
Faced with an alarming spike in Covid cases, authorities in Pune have imposed a 12-hour long night curfew, starting 6 pm today for a period of at least one week. Pune on Friday recorded its highest single-day high of 9,086 cases, taking its tally to 5,51,508.
The overall global Covid-19 caseload has surpassed the grim milestone of 130 million as the pandemic is still raging, while the deaths have surged to more than 2.86 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University.
