Ahead of cyclone Yaas’ effect to be seen in the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold an important meeting at 11am today with top government officials and representatives from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), secretaries from telecom, power, civil aviation, earth sciences to review preparedness of the situation across the country. The meeting will also see the presence of Home Minister and other officials.
The cyclone, that is expected to intensify into ‘severe storm’, is currently brewing at Bay of Bengal and is likely to affect Odisha and West Bengal. As per the Indian Metrological Department’s assessment, the cyclone will hit the coasts on May 26.
Meanwhile, Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba had chaired a meeting of the National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) on Saturday to review the preparedness of Central and state/UT governments and agencies for the cyclone.
The Indian Navy is in constant touch with NDRF and other concerned authorities and is closely monitoring the movement of the Cyclonic Storm. The armed force has already started have preparatory activities to combat its effects.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier advised states and UTs to take precautionary measures in advance to suffer minimal loss at the hands of natural calamity. In line with the same, eight flood relief teams and four diving teams have been prepositioned at Odisha and West Bengal to augment the existing resources. As many as four naval ships are on standby with Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR). Meanwhile, medical teams are also being sent to offer assistance in the most affected areas along the Odisha and West Bengal coast. In the same time, naval aircraft are also kept ready at Naval Air stations, INS Dega at Visakhapatnam and INS Rajali near Chennai to undertake survey, if required, of affected areas post the cyclone.
