India-Canada Relations: The trade mission from Canada to India, originally planned for October, has been delayed. This update was verified by Shanti Cosentino, who serves as the spokesperson for Canadian Trade Minister Mary Ng.
Trade mission delayed after just after G20 Summit
This development follows closely after a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during the G20 Summit in New Delhi. On September 10, during their discussions, Prime Minister Modi expressed Delhi’s serious apprehensions regarding ongoing anti-India activities carried out by extremist groups in Canada. These activities include the promotion of secessionism, incitement of violence against Indian diplomats, and threats against the Indian community residing in Canada.
“At this time, we are postponing the upcoming trade mission to India,” the spokesperson stated, without specifying a cause. Nevertheless, earlier this month, Canada halted negotiations on a trade agreement with India.
Trudeau’s emphasis on “Mutual respect and trust”
During his discussions with Trudeau, Prime Minister Modi also emphasised the importance of a relationship founded on “mutual respect and trust” for the advancement of India-Canada relations. Speaking to the press after his meeting with Prime Minister Modi, Trudeau stated that his nation will consistently support the freedom of peaceful protest. However, he also affirmed that they will consistently oppose violence and counteract hatred.
Canada boasts the largest Sikh population outside of Punjab, India, and has witnessed numerous protests that have strained relations with India. Canada previously declared a similar pause earlier this month, citing the necessity to “assess the situation.” Just four months ago, both countries had expressed their intention to finalise an initial trade agreement within the current year.
