Former congress leader PC Chacko has joned the Nationalist Congress Party on Tuesday. He had quit Congress last week. “I am formally joining the NCP today. NCP is a part of the Left Democractic as a part of NCP,” news agency quoted the veteran leader as saying.
“Today, the need is the unity of the opposition. A united opposition should emerge as an alternative to the BJP. I don’t see that initiative in the party which I was a member of earlier,” he added.
The announcement of the leader donning the new political outfit was made in a press conference in Delhi on Tuesday. The conference also saw the presence of Communist Party of India (Marxist) cheif Sitaram Yechury. Before joining NCP, Chacko also served as a member of Parliament from Thrissur Lok Sabha seat in Kerala.
Chacko had handed in his resignation to Congress president Sonia Gandhi on March 10. He had called it “very difficult for a sincere Congress worker to survive. Merit is not a concern at all.” He had also called out the party for its leadership and said that it is a rudderless shop that has failed to find a President for a year.
He had also accused top leaders of Congress of implementing groupism, reflecting on intra party conflicts. ” Kerala is facing a crucial election. People want Congress to come back but there’s groupism practiced by top leaders of the Congress. I have been arguing with high command that this should be ended. But the high command is also agreeing to the proposal given by both groups,” he had said.
The development comes week ahead of the Assembly Polls that are scheduled to be held in the state in a single phase on April 6.
