Dual Citizenship

Dual Citizenship: Union Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar stated that although the debate over dual citizenship is “still alive,” “there are challenges in providing it to Indians settled abroad.” “There are economic and security challenges as to Indians living in which countries should be provided with dual citizenship,” Jaishankar said while speaking at an event in Chennai

A Potential Solution Amidst Ongoing Dual Citizenship Debate

He noted that while the debate is still ongoing, the Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) drive is a step towards fulfilling the demand, as reported by Hindustan Times. A person with dual or multiple citizenship has the simultaneous legal status of being a citizen of two or more nations. This grants automatic work permits, waives the need for a visa, and permits participation in both countries’ political affairs. Dual citizens have equal social and legal rights and are able to possess passports for both nations. Restrictions, however, might be in place based on the national policies of the participating nations.

Nations Offering Dual Citizenship

Dual citizenship is offered by the US, Finland, Albania, Israel, and Pakistan, among other nations. Every nation has different laws and regulations, though. The Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) programme is available to Indians who are not residents, despite the Indian Constitution forbidding citizens from holding two citizenships. However, people who moved to Bangladesh and Pakistan are not eligible for this benefit.

A Package of Privileges for Holders

OCIs have access to a number of benefits, such as multiple entry visas, lifetime visa privileges for travel to India, and the opportunity to become citizens of India once certain requirements are met. but are not allowed to vote or run for office in India, according to a Hindustan Times article.
