Deepfake: Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology and Communications, Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced the Indian government’s commitment to address the growing threat of deepfake technology in society. Following meetings with stakeholders, including social media platforms, Nasscom, and AI experts, Vaishnaw stated that new regulations would be formulated within the next 10 days. The proposed regulations will focus on four key aspects: detecting deepfakes, preventing their dissemination, enhancing reporting mechanisms, and raising public awareness about the issue. The government is also considering imposing penalties on both the creators and platforms hosting deepfake content.
Stakeholders Pledge Collaboration to Mitigate Deepfake Risks
In response to the imminent regulatory framework, social media platforms and companies affirmed their commitment to taking internal measures to curb the spread of deepfakes. While awaiting formal regulations, these entities expressed their willingness to intensify efforts to address the challenges posed by deepfake technology. The government’s proactive approach reflects a recognition of the potential threats posed by deepfake content and seeks to establish a comprehensive framework for its prevention and mitigation.
