Delhi airport chaos: The airline Indigo has issued a travel warning, advising customers to arrive at the airport at least 3.5 hours before domestic departures, in response to reports of disorder and congestion at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), Delhi. For a speedy security check, it has also requested the travelers to only bring one piece of hand luggage that weighs 7 kg.
“The Delhi airports are experiencing high footfalls and the check-in and boarding time is expected to be longer than usual. Passengers are requested to reach the airport at least 3.5 hrs prior to domestic departures, and to carry only 01 piece of hand baggage weighing 7 kgs for a smooth security check,” Indigo said.

“Please ensure that you complete your web check-in, for added convenience.Please use gate numbers 5 and 6 for entry at Delhi Airport, Terminal 3, as these are nearest to the IndiGo check-in counters,” it further mentioned.

Passengers at Delhi Airport

Passengers have been venting about the chaotic scenes at the Delhi airport on Twitter for the past few days, and many have posted images of the lengthy lines at security checks.

The chaotic check-in process and the rush in the lounge were examples of the lax airport management. Before the flight’s final takeoff, passengers grumbled about having to wait two to three hours at the clearing area.

Jyotiraditya Scindia, the minister of civil aviation, paid a surprise visit to Terminal 3 of the Delhi airport on Monday and reviewed the strategies that had been developed over the previous week to reduce congestion there. The BJP leader assessed the situation, consulted with all the interested parties, and gave instructions for improvements that the ministry is hoping will help the situation.

Display boards, ushers and Real-time update

The Aviation Minister’s instructions call for the construction of digital display boards showing the wait time at each entry gate as well as at least one board at the terminal checkpoint. In order to reduce congestion, ushers and crowd managers will direct travelers at the airport.
Scindia additionally recommended that real-time updates on the wait time be shared on social media. All airlines have been instructed to maintain a fully staffed check-in desk, especially during busy times.

Planes during the morning peak hours will be decreased, and efforts will also be made to transfer certain flights from Terminal 3, according to news agency PTI, in an effort to alleviate the ongoing airport congestion. The busiest times are between 4 and 8 p.m. and 5 to 9 a.m.

Real-time crowd monitoring will be done by a command centre at the gates. Additional ATRS (Automatic Tray Retrieval System) baggage check machines would be placed at T3 domestic in order to ease congestion, the authorities told PTI. After the minister’s Monday morning visit to T3 of the Delhi airport, an action plan was created.
