The Delhi government’s much-ambitious market rehabilitation project which was announced in its rozgar budget last year will soon be materialised. To carry out the ins and outs of the project, the Delhi government is going to collaborate with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). The project aims to revamp the infrastructure and improve accessibility along with providing basic amenities. A beautification process will also be carried out to attract more customers. Redevelopment work in well-known markets like Gandhi Nagar, Kamla Nagar, Khari Baoli, Lajpat Nagar, Sarojini Nagar, and Kirti Nagar was planned to begin last year but was delayed by the MCD’s lack of consent at the time, when the BJP was in power, as per officials.
AAP appoints MCD as executive agency
According to sources, the Delhi government has now appointed MCD as the executive agency for the rehabilitation of the marketplaces. On Wednesday, AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj joined Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a high-level review meeting with the relevant departments to discuss the status of the work.
The officials further said that Kejriwal directed that the MCD be named as the executing agency for these marketplaces because the majority of them fall within the authority of the civic body. However, for Sarojini Nagar, New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) will work.

Skilled architects to design infrastructure
Officials further added that skilled architects are preparing the primary design for these markets and the renovation work will take place in stages. To choose the finest design, a competition will be held in July-August, and the top selected first will begin work in 12 months. The phase-wise strategy calls for the construction of the infrastructure to start first.
‘Dilli Bazar’
The Delhi government will also introduce the ‘Dilli Bazar’ e-portal where 10,000 vendors from various markets of Delhi can sell their goods online directly. According to officials, the gateway is nearing completion. According to officials, the Delhi government hopes to add over 1 lakh shops to the network within six months of its opening and provide them with a 24-hour online presence. This could prove to be a revolutionary platform for the growth and development of Delhi’s vendors.
