The Delhi High Court on Monday issued a summon to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) on a defamation case filed by a Gujarat-based NGO. The NGO named ‘Justice on Trial’ claims that the contentious documentary on the 2002 Gujarat Riots is against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, adding that it ‘cast a slur’ on the reputation of India and the Indian judiciary.
Delhi Court issues summon to BBC
The Delhi HC has summoned BBC over its controversial documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi after a Gujarat-based NGO filed a defamation suit against it.
Senior advocate Harish Salve, appearing for the NGO, said the suit for defamation against the BBC is in relation to the documentary, claiming it has “defamed” India and the whole system including the judiciary.
“It is contended that the documentary makes defamatory imputation and castes slur on the reputation of the country and the judiciary and against the Prime Minister. Issue notice to the respondents…,” the court said.
About BBC’s controversial documentary
The BBC released a documentary film titled ‘India: The Modi Question’ in January that featured the Gujrat riots of 2022. The two-part documentary claimed that it investigated certain aspects related to the 2002 Gujarat Riots when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the chief minister of Gujarat. The documentary has been trashed by the Ministry of External Affairs as a “propaganda piece” that reflected a “colonial mindset”.
