Delhi’s legislators now receive a monthly salary of 90,000 instead of the previous 54,000 owing to a 66.67% increase in salary and allowances. The speaker, deputy speaker, chief whip, and leader of the opposition now get a monthly salary and allowances worth 170,000 yen instead of the previous 72,000 yen.
Legislators’ base pay has grown from $12,000 to $30,000 per month, and ministers’ pay has gone from $20,000 to $60,000 per month.
On Thursday of last week, the law, justice, and legislative affairs department of the Delhi government published a notification regarding the increase in pay and benefits. This change marks the first of its kind since 2011.
The most recent salary increase became effective on February 14 after receiving the President’s approval.
Dilip Kumar Pandey, top whip for the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), claimed that despite the increase, Delhi still has the lowest-paid legislators in the nation. “We welcome the approval of the salary and allowances revision, but we are still the lowest paid despite Delhi being among the cities with the highest cost of living in the country,” said Pandey.
Pension of former lawmakers has also increased
An official said the pension of former lawmakers has also increased. “Now the former MLAs [members of legislative assembly] will get ₹15,000 per month as pension instead of ₹7500,” the official said.
Five measures requesting an increase in salary and benefits for Delhi ministers and MLAs in July 2022 were approved by the Delhi Assembly. The laws that were later transmitted to the President through Delhi’s lieutenant governor have the support of both the AAP and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party lawmakers.
Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, the leader of the opposition, claimed that the salary and benefits for Delhi’s legislators have increased for the first time in 11 years. “The Delhi MPs deserved a pay raise and other benefits so they could pay their bills.”
A December 2015 Delhi government proposal for MLA salaries and benefits totaling 2.10 lakh a month was rejected by the Union home ministry.
