Delhi Exercise Policy Case: Manish Sisodia’s judicial custody was extended by a Delhi court on Monday in a case involving alleged irregularities in the formulation and execution of the Union territory government’s excise policy by 14 days, till April 17.
Sisodia was brought before the court by the CBI, who asked for an extension of his judicial custody, claiming that the investigation into the case was at a crucial moment. Accepting the plea, the court ordered the AAP heavyweight held in custody till April 17 th.
Sisodia’s request for bail was denied by Special Judge MK Nagpal, who noted that the charges against him were severe and that since he had only been detained in February, the case had not yet reached that point.
According to news agency ANI, the judge stated that Sisodia’s position in the case is still under investigation, and that certain other co-accused parties’ activities are also still being looked into.
The CBI claims that Sisodia was “prima facie the architect” of the criminal conspiracy involving the alleged payment of advance kickbacks of about Rs 90–100 crore, meant for him and his colleagues in the Delhi government, and that he also played the “most significant and critical role.”
On February 26, the CBI detained Sisodia in relation to allegations of corruption in the creation and execution of the now-cancelled Delhi Excise Policy 2021–2022.
The AAP strongly rejects the claim that the Delhi government’s excise policy, which grants licences to liquor sellers, promoted cartelization and favoured some dealers who reportedly paid bribes for it.
After the policy was later changed and the Delhi LG suggested a CBI investigation, the ED filed a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act against the same accused (PMLA).
