After three failed efforts throughout a dispute between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the BJP, Delhi’s civic body will meet on Thursday to elect a mayor.
Officials said today that Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has agreed to the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s party’s plan to hold the mayor election on February 16.
Due to protests by the BJP and AAP when 10 MCD members selected by the Lieutenant Governor were allowed to vote, the mayor was not able to be elected when the councillors met on January 6 and 24, or on February 6.
Nominated members, or aldermen, are not permitted to vote in house meetings, according to the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act.
The Delhi representative for the Centre, Mr. VK Saxena, nominated the aldermen, and the AAP has strongly opposed their right to vote. These members, according to the party, have an inclination to back the BJP.
AAP claims that the BJP is attempting to take over control of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi
Despite the fact that the AAP won far more seats than the BJP in the most recent election to the civic body, the Chief Minister’s AAP claims that the BJP is attempting to take over control of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi by electing a leader to the post of mayor.
With 134 ward wins and the termination of the BJP’s 15-year rule in the local body, the AAP was declared the obvious winner of the MCD elections in December. The Congress won nine seats, and the BJP gained 104 wards to place second.
Five one-year terms are available for the position of mayor of Delhi, with the first year designated for women, the second for the open category, the third for the reserved category, and the final two terms once more available for the open category. As a result, Delhi will have a woman mayor this year.
After merging three divisions of the municipal body last year, the city will have a singular mayor for the first time in ten years.
