Delhi MCD election: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) held the election for the position of mayor once more after a failed attempt two weeks ago. Shelly Oberoi and Aaley Mohammad Iqbal are the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) nominees for mayor and deputy mayor, respectively. Rekha Gupta will run for mayor, while Kamal Bagri, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, will serve as her running mate for BJP.
Delhi to get its first woman mayor
Both the candidates nominated — from BJP and AAP — for the position of mayor are women. Therefore, Delhi is sure to get its first woman mayor.
BJP hopeful of winning
BJP is confident that it will win the mayor’s election. Ramesh Bidhuri, a BJP member, said, “Despite a minor margin of defeat, we will prevail in the race for mayor. The AAP members who paid between 50 and 70 lakh for tickets will finally understand the reality.”
Gautam Gambhir, a fellow BJP member, remarked, “We conduct politics differently than the Aam Aadmi Party. I hope there is calm during the election… Whoever is elected mayor (position), they should serve Delhi’s residents.”
Ruckus at MCD house
With AAP council members shouting “shame shame,” the new 250-member MCD House convened on a chaotic note. Members appointed by the Lt Governor took the oath in front of the elected representatives.
Both the parties have claimed sustaining injuries while protesting. The BJP said its councillors Inder Kaur, Anita Deoli and Kamaljeet Sherawat were injured while protesting. AAP, on the other hand, took to social media to share proof of physical violence against their candidates.
