Delhi Metro starts ‘QR Code’ ticketing system on all routes

Delhi Metro

All of the Delhi Metro’s lines will now accept paper tickets with QR codes. With the addition of this feature, commuters will also be able to utilise paper tickets with QR Codes in addition to tokens.

DMRC has upgraded its AFC (Automatic Fare Collection) gates and token/customer service counters to support the QR-based Paper tickets in order to provide this facility. At first, two AFC gates—one for entry and one for exit—were modified at all stations to accommodate travel by paper tickets with QR codes.

It is also planned to implement mobile-based QR tickets by the end of this month, making Metro travel more seamless, simple, and time-saving.

How to use QR ticket at stations:

  1. The station where the QR-based Paper Ticket (non-refundable) was issued will be the point of entry for passengers. Entry is only allowed from the station that issued the ticket.
  2. However, in the event of a revenue service failure, a refund for a paper ticket with a QR code will be given by applying incident fare mode in accordance with the established method.
  3. After receiving a paper ticket with a QR code, passengers will have 60 minutes to enter.
  4. A passenger’s QR-based paper ticket becomes worthless if they do not use it to enter the system within 60 minutes of the time it was issued, and they will not be allowed to enter the station or receive a refund.
  5. Currently, QR-based Paper Tickets will only be distributed station-wise, or from one station to another.
  6. A free departure ticket will be given to the customer and the old QR-based Paper Ticket will be kept by the Customer Care operator if the passenger wishes to exit from any intermediate station, i.e., one that is before the destination station.
  7. Using the QR-based Paper Ticket will prevent the AFC gates from opening if a passenger wishes to leave from any station other than the destination station. If there is any applicable surcharge, it will be subtracted from the passenger’s fare difference.
  8. Any phone image or copy of a paper ticket with a QR code will be treated as invalid, and passengers carrying such images or copies will be handled in accordance with the DMRC’s current business rules.

Recently, DMRC has gradually begun experimenting with QR tickets on all of its lines. Additionally, it is planned to upgrade Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs) to allow for the issuance of paper tickets with QR codes by the end of June this year, along with making all AFC gates throughout the network QR code compliant.

With the implementation of these more transparent, human intervention-free, and cashless methods, the idea of issuing tokens will eventually be phased out, allowing for more easy, smooth, time-saving, and error-free travel for its users.
