Delhi News: On Wednesday, the Supreme Court endorsed the Centre’s decision to prolong Delhi Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar’s term by six months, asserting it did not breach constitutional powers.
Centre’s authority over matters
The court emphasized the Centre’s authority over matters such as police, land, and public order, beyond the Delhi government’s jurisdiction. The judgment, deemed a “prima facie view,” awaits further scrutiny by a five-judge constitution bench to assess legal and constitutional aspects.
Queries from bench:
The Centre, confirming its intent to extend Kumar’s tenure temporarily, faced queries from the bench regarding the legal basis for this extension. The Solicitor General clarified the extension’s limited duration, assuring a subsequent appointment. The Centre had until Wednesday to furnish grounds justifying the extension.
