Delhi Services Bill Presented in Lok Sabha, Amit Shah Invokes Constitutional Authority

Amit Shah: The Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023 was introduced into Parliament on Tuesday by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The controversial Ordinance on the control of services in the national capital is to be replaced by this measure. Introducing the bill in Parliament, Amit Shah said “the Constitution gives Parliament all right to bring any law with respect to Delhi”.

BJD Supports Centre on Delhi Ordinance Bill, Citing Supreme Court’s Ruling and Constitutional Basis

Biju Janata Dal (BJD) supported the Centre on the Delhi Ordinance Bill. BJD MP Pinaki Mishra said, “The Supreme Court judgment says that Parliament can enact any law in the case of Delhi. All objections are political. They have a constitutional foundation of Parliamentary foundation. Hence, give us the right to introduce the bill.” The Bill suggests that the centre would be in charge of decisions on suspensions and inquiries involving officials in the national capital. It was introduced this afternoon amidst a commotion over the Manipur issue in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The Manipur issue caused a snag in today’s Parliament session as the opposition parties requested a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the violent state.

Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Recessed Amidst Chaos

At 11 am, as Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla attempted to start Question Hour, the opposition members started yelling protest-related chants. After only 15 minutes of operation, both Houses of Parliament immediately recessed till 3 o’clock.
