Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, the divisive leader of the Dera Sacha Sauda in Sirsa, Haryana, was once more let out of jail ahead of an election; this time, he was granted 40-day parole from the Sunaria jail in Rohtak. After being freed, he immediately traveled under heavy police protection to his dear in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh.
The Dera president is presently incarcerated for raping two of his female disciples at the Dera’s headquarters in Sirsa after being found guilty for the first time in August 2017 by a Special CBI court in Panchkula.
The nomination-filing period for the upcoming panchayat elections in Haryana began today. Additionally, on November 3 there will be the crucial Adampur bypoll. As a result, questions about the timing of the Dera chief’s parole are being raised, despite statements from Ranjit Singh, the Haryana Minister of Jail (also responsible for Power and New and Renewable Energy), that “it is a convict’s right to receive parole.”

According to the legislation, after serving a year of their sentence for a conviction, a prisoner has the right to be freed from custody on parole.
2019 saw the conviction of Gurmeet and three other defendants for the 2002 slaying of journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati. He was found guilty a third-time last year, this time for conspiring with four other people to kill the Dera’s former manager Ranjit Singh, who was killed by gunfire in 2002.
